eyelash, long eyelashesHave you ever wondered exactly why longer eyelashes have been considered a sign of beauty for thousands of years in virtually all cultures across the world? There can be no doubt that long eyelashes definitely look more attractive than those that are short and stubby, but perhaps there is an inherent reason why we find them aesthetically pleasing. For starters the eyelashes actually serve two physiological purposes. They protect the eye from fragments of dirt that can cause damage. Eyelashes are also very sensitive to touch so they let us know if anyone or anything is coming too close. Therefore it stands to reason that a person with naturally long eyelashes is more likely to have healthier eyes.
Conversely a person who has no eyelashes could have an ailment such as blepharosis or madarosis or be suffering from a vitamin deficiency. Therefore the human preference for longer eyelashes may have something to do with the fact that we naturally seek a healthy mate who would make a good mother or a worthy provider. That may sound crazy until you really stop to think about it. A man with no eyelashes might get something in his eye that makes him go blind. A blind man cannot hunt for prey. A woman who does not have long eyelashes might be weak and malnourished and therefore less physically adept when it comes to nurturing children.
